Aristotle and The Signing of the Constitution

Image
Aristotle and The Signing of the Constitution  How would Aristotle have responded to this painting?     He would probably be very happy to see that a new government is being formed with a whole group of people with multiple inputs. He would have also been very happy that there will be multiple levels to this newly made government. How many elements of society are represented in this painting?     This painting represents the word of people to form a viable compromise and the formation of a government. Would Aristotle have believed that this painting depicted a democracy or an oligarchy?     I think he would have believed that is could be an oligarchy because there is only a select group of people shown in the painting. However, it still has the makings of democracy because each opinion is important in decision making.

Thoreau's "Civil Disobedience" and The Mexican-American War

Thoreau through quotes     "If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away."  Thoreau is expressing, in this quote, that he believes that the individual is important and should be let alone to do his own thing. This may end up leading to something great versus living in a society that is afraid to do what they want because there will be severe repercussions from their government.        "Is it not possible that an individual may be right and a government wrong? Are laws to be enforced simply because they were made? Or declared by any number of men to be good, if they are not good?"  Here he expresses that there will always be the possibility of the government acting in the wrong. If the government is doing so then the people should be able to speak up without fear. If laws were made with many flaws and are believed to be good for the country howev

Rousseau and Machiavelli

Jean-Jacques Rousseau      Rousseau believed that the government should return small communities that were not ruled by a government with major power over them. I think that Rousseau would approve of democracy because there is a government however it does not take away the original way that humans used to live, small communities.     Rousseau would probably like to see rulers that stayed away from governing to much and letting the small communities exist within themselves. He would definitely be one that would like to see a government where the rulers use very little power over their subjects. Niccol o Mach iavelli     Machiavelli would not have agreed with Rousseau by any means. He believed that without enough governing people will run amuck. He would probably agree with the need for change but not in the form of a rebellion since it is so violent. As for Jefferson, I think that he takes a good balance of both men's advice.
